What is topographic mapping used for?

What is the difference between a DEM and a DTM?
A Digital Elevation Model represents the bare earth surface without vegetation or structures. A Digital Terrain Model typically incorporates breaklines and natural terrain features such as ridgelines and stream channels for more accurate representation. Both are used in infrastructure and planning projects, and the right choice depends on your requirements.
Can you create contour maps from LiDAR data?
Yes. LiDAR is the most accurate source for contour mapping and topographic analysis. We work with publicly available national and state LiDAR datasets as well as client-supplied point cloud data.
How accurate is topographic mapping?
Accuracy depends on the data source. LiDAR-derived products typically achieve vertical accuracy of ±0.10 m to ±0.30 m. Photogrammetric data typically achieves ±0.20 m to ±0.50 m. We advise on the most appropriate source and achievable accuracy at the quoting stage.
